Mastering the art of the smokey eye is a beauty rite of passage. It may take a few dozen tries and a raccoon reference or two, but you’re bound to succeed if you keep at it until your smokey eye spells perfection. Right in time for the holiday season, nail your smokey eyeso you’re bound to turn heads. It will prove the ideal accessory forjazzing up all those glitzy holiday dresses you’ve got on deck.

Proper Prep. Make sure eyes are clean and dry to avoid smudgy shadow. Brush lids with a translucent powder and under-eyes if they tend to get oily.

Get the right shape. Smokey eyes from decades past used to emphasizeyour crease, but ditch this outdated look. Instead, saturate lash line and blend shadow up for a more youthful look.

Skip glittery shadows. Matte blackshadows and those with a hint of metallic black shadows make for a fabulously edgy look.

Look to the lash line. Wrap color around the entire eye for a look that screams dramatic. Cover the inner and outer corners, then diffuse shadow up all the way to your crease. Keep tracing the eye until color looks your desired intensity, then blend it from the upper lashline all over the lid.”

Go bold. To add more drama, dust asheer gray shadow over your creaseand all the way up to the brow bone. Don’t smudge shadow past outer corners of the eye. This trick is only for the pros. You may think you’re good to give it a shot, but doing so can go wrong quickly withjust one misstep.
