Few things make us feel more fabulous than a fresh mani on a gloomy day. When the pains of everyday life get to be too much, it’s comforting to know that a quick pick-me-up is just a car ride away. But while it may seem easy enough to splash out $30 to make your less-than-perfect nails look flashy and new, that doesn’t change the fact that there is still some unhealthiness going on there beneath the paint. You may be harboring some seriously weak nails under that faux-tough exterior. Luckily, aside from adequate moisturizing and using sunscreen, there are several ways to maintain a good set of strong, healthy nails to ensure your hands are always in tip-top shape. Among these are using a good moisturizer, protecting hands with gloves during washing dishes and avoiding biting nails all together. Nail strengthening formulas can also forge an impact on overall nail health. Follow this DIY recipe for a simple and natural way to keep nails in check.
A few ingredients is all you need to master the DIY nail strengthener for those Hercules-esque nails you crave for the cool seasons. Castor oil makes for a handy nail strengthener due to its deep-conditioning and moisturizing properties. This vegetable-based oil can also prevent cracking, keeping nails strong. Adding in some vitamin E will enhance protection while oils like eucalyptus and lavender smell fabulous and contain antiseptic properties, as well.
DIY Nail Strengthener
1 teaspoon castor oil
2 vitamin E gel capsules, broken open (capsules discarded)
Several clean cotton balls
Small glass container or bowl
Optional: 3-5 drops eucalyptus or lavender essential oil
To start, put castor oil into a small glass container. Using a sharp knife, pierce the vitamin E capsules over the glass container, allowing liquid to drip into it. Discard capsules once this step is complete. If you decide to use an essential oil like lavender for a great smell, add in 3-5 drops of the stuff into the glass, mixing it with a spoon to blend. Once the recipe is complete, use a cotton ball or q-tip to rub mixture over the nails, twice a day to keep nail and cuticles up to par. Gently rub off the mixture with a cotton ball after about 5 minutes on the nail. Once this is complete, rub hands with a moisturizing lotion. This will create that soft, silky finish that always seals the deal on a fabulous mani/pedi session.
