Lifesaving Summer Hair Care Tips

Girls, the summer months are finally upon us and while there are many great things about the warm weather, it’s not the best for our hair. Warm weather can dry out our hair and if you use the pool frequently in the summer you’re likely to see some majorly negative impacts from the chlorine. Additionally, we spend so much of our time in the summer out in the pool, or at the beach which means that our hair is constantly getting wet. This has a really harsh and drying impact on our hair. Just like it’s important to take extra good care of your skin in the summer, it’s equally important to pay extra close attention to your hair. Here are some tips we’ve gathered to ensure that your hair stays in pristine condition through the end of the summer.

1. Use a wide toothed comb instead of brush

After you get out of the pool you’re inevitably going to want to run a brush through your hair. However, brushes are incredibly bad for wet hair. It’s best to use the widest tooth comb you can find. Wide tooth combs prevent breakage which causes frizzy, dry and damaged hair.

2. Don’t Skip the Conditioner

While conditioner is important all year round, it becomes especially crucial during the summer months. Like we mentioned earlier, our hair lacks moisture during the summer months so it’s incredibly important to hydrate it with things like deep conditioner and hydrating oils. You can use a leave in conditioner as well to ensure that your hair is getting the proper amount of nutrients it needs.

3. Minimize exposure to the Sun

This follows the same logic as not exposing your skin to the sun when it’s sunny out. The harsh sun takes a toll on your hair, robs it of nutrients and dries it out. Try putting your hair up in buns and braids to minimize the exposure they’re getting to the sun. You can also use a large hat or a scarf over your hair if you’d prefer.

4. Green Hair

If you’re one of those people whose hair turns green after they spend time in the pool, you’re not alone! But don’t worry, you can use a mixture of 1/4 cups apple cider vinegar with two cups of water to wash your hair and it will get rid of the green color.
